Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - 21st Birthday!
Twenty one years ago
today yesterday we got Super Mario Land 2, one of the best games that ever came out for Game Boy! Mario got new power ups as he traversed the land in search of six gold coins, culminating in his first ever showdown with WARIO, Since we’ve had that twisted anti-Mario character present in our lives for 21 years now, it’s time we got that man a drink (not that he seems to need one):
Super Wario Drink (Super Mario Land 2 Cocktail)
- 2 oz. vodka
- ½ oz. lemon juice
- Huckleberry soda
- Frozen mangos
- Garnish with lemon peel
Stir the vodka and lemon juice together in a glass. Drop in some ice and frozen mangos and fill it up with huckleberry soda. Garnish it with a lemon peel that just happens to look like a sinister mustache. Go crazy.
On November 1, 1992 Mario got to power up with carrots for the first time, transform himself into Rabbit Mario, and glide his way to Wario’s Castle. But Wario got to make use of his own carrots to become Rabbit Wario. The two have been matching wits for over two decades now and Wario’s made a great addition to the Nintendo universe. With that said, pour one of these out, relax and let the Wario hypnosis sooth your mind.
Super Mario Kart - 21st Birthday!
People! The first Mario Kart game game out for Super Nintendo 21 YEARS AGO TODAY! Super Mario Kart was the first time we got to fall into infinite space off the seizure-inducing Rainbow Road. So, we really had no choice but to make this powerful, colorful, easy-to-spill drink:
Rainbow Road (Super Mario Kart Cocktail)
- 4 oz. orange juice
- ½ oz. gin
- ⅓ oz. grenadine
- ⅓ oz. rum
- 3 oz. vodka
- Two splashes blue Curacao
Mix orange juice and gin together and pour them into the glass. Then, stir the rum and grenadine together and pour it slowly down the side of the glass - it should settle at the bottom, turning the bottom red and the area immediately above it orange. Mix the vodka and blue Curacao together and then layer it on top of the orange juice. The top should remain blue, but some should settle down to create a green layer. Like Super Mario Kart's toughest course, this drink may be difficult to finish.
In addition to taking our inaugural drifts around Rainbow Road, on September 1, 1992 we triggered boos and lightning bolts, played as Koopa Troopa and Bowser, and tied balloons to our karts and shot each other with shells FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. The original game is still a ton of fun, but it’s great to see how much those basic elements have evolved over the last 21 years.
Here, have a taste of the madness! (video below):
Kirby’s Dream Land - 21st Birthday!
We’re introducing a new recurring feature celebrating the 21st birthdays of some of the great Nintendo games of all time. Today marks the 21st anniversary of the release of Kirby’s Dream Land on Game Boy! To celebrate, we created a drink based on that villainous apple tree who became a staple of the franchise: Whispy Woods!
Whispy Woods (Kirby’s Dream Land Cocktail)
- 12 oz. bottle Angry Orchard dry apple cider
- 1 oz. bourbon whiskey
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon sour cherry syrup
- Garnish with apple slice and sour cherry
Stir all liquid ingredients in a tall glass with ice and then garnish with fruit. You’ll be able to finish it off really easily (not unlike Kirby’s first boss battle).
On August 1, 1992 we got to use warp stars, spicy curry, and maximum tomatoes for the first time. While Kirby was still white and didn’t have his copying abilities yet, he could destroy enemies with powerful vocal blasts through a microphone and get amped on mint leaves. In addition to Kirby and Whispy Woods, we also met Waddle Dee, Kracko, and King Dedede.
For those of you who want to revisit some of that historic Kirby charm along with your drink, here’s a little taste of 1992:
